DONNELLY, Idaho (AP) -- President Bush has rapped sharp critics of his Iraq war policy, saying they advocate a position that would weaken the United States.

Why do you think that Iraq, if it's truly interested in a peaceful democracy as we were told they were before the invasion, can't solve their own problems?

How long did it take US to 'solve our own problems?' I'd say the better part of 100 years......and that was without multiple terrorists invading from all sides.

You clearly don't have much respect for the Iraqi people OR for the U.S. military or the Commander in Chief.

We will leave when the mission has been accomplished. Not when some computer armchair general lacking adequate information (or an understanding of history)...... like you......... thinks we should.

Please leave the strategy to the military. It is nice you have opinions. It does not make them FACTS. The habit of the Cast Iron Conservatives, which they strangely share with the Hysteric Left, of stating their opinions as if they were holy writ is really annoying and tiresome

Amen!

Right-wing purists meet the left on many issues, don't they, Johnnie?

I guess their shared disdain for the Commander in Chief blurs their vision a bit..... They even voice a trust for what the leftist media is telling them over trust in this administration. Scary, IMO.

This President and his troops are doing what is best for America in Iraq. They know it, and most Americans know it. The troops know they are fighting this evil in Iraq so that they won't have to fight it here. And the commanders in the field are calling the shots.

I trust them.

How many troops did we have in Germany or Japan in 1947?

(That's the only fair comparison).

I dunno. Same reason we don't have enough people to stand up and put a stop to the foolishness that's going on in Washington, I suppose. Fractionalization, Factionalization, and lack of a common goal. A few have always been able to terrorize & tyrannize the many.

Iraq was controlled by strong-arm tactics from 1958. Abdul-Karim Qassim began the history by leading a military takeover because of the pro-West leanings of the monarchy. In 1963, Abdul-Salam Arif came to power after another takeover. He died in a helicopter accident in 1966 and his brother Abdul-Rahman Arif replaced him. In 1968, the Ba'athists lead a takeover and they made Ahmad Hassan al-Bakir Iraq's leader, but he was only a face man for Saddam Hussein, who ruled over Iraq formally when Ahmad stepped down in 1979. Saddam became King Kong in Iraqi politics because of how good he was at making offers people couldn't refuse, to turn a phrase. The Ba'ath elders thought he was a real superstar in the making and pulled every string they could to get him into the highest echelons of power. You have to give the elders credit, because clearly they had a good eye for talent. Saddam was no putz.

The Ba'athists were secular national socialists fiercely proud of their Arab-hood. Iraqis didn't hate everything about Saddam. They appreciated what he did for Iraq's place in the world. They were proud to be Iraqis because of Saddam. They didn't care for the terror tactics of the Ba'athists, but that's how they kept dissenters at bay.

Do we really want to train them to be Europeans?

The reason we don't do anything about the foolishness in DC is simply because it's not important enough to us. That's another way of saying what you said. So, as long as ridding the country of the insurgents is quite important, the country can be united behind crushing the insurgency. Right now, they don't view it as important because we're taking care of it and because they believe the insurgents only hate us and not the Iraqis. If we leave, we can show them that they are wrong and they will be forced to crush them-- or perhaps they are right and the insurgents will leave. Either way, though, we win.

To: When do we get liberated?

No, train them in crushing the insurgency off-site (in Europe).

if they are properly based, and have defined missions for offensive operations and protecting strategic targets - as many as needed.

Seems Cindy didn't like what the president said today, which I know you are shocked to hear. You should read what craziness and flat out lies she posted at huffington. Her head is exploding.

What exactly is the mission?

And you haven't actually said why what I propose is ill-conceived. I'm not even going to respond to your other foolish and childish remarks. You should grow up, child.

I respect the Iraqis. I actually think they aren't incapable of dealing with a minor insurgency relative to their total population, if fully equipped by us to do so. You think they are imbeciles, apparently.

I have not said anything that suggests I lack respect for the military or for Bush, but if attacking me with those talking points makes you feel better, go right ahead.

LOL! Way to keep the discussion above the belt, Granite.

I'm probably old enough to be your mother.............though clearly not as egotistical.

End of discussion. You win. Abizaid is a fool. Rice is a fool. Rumsfeld is a fool. Bush is a fool. But Granite State is wise beyond measure, and I bow to his infinite military and political knowledge........ (especially in areas in which he has no intelligence, or classified information).

You certainly attempt to paint all Iraqis with the same brush. Ask the Iraqi ghosts and their survivors from the mass graves if they hated anything about Saddam. Ask the ghosts of the shredders and their surviving families if they hated anything about Saddam. Ask the young victims of the rape rooms, ask the people who had their tongues cut out, their ears cut off how they felt about Saddam. Sadaam ruled the Ba'athists who did nothing without approval from him.

I am stuned at posting to another FReeper who is defending Sadaam's rule.

which mission? I only ask because if the mission is the total elimination of the insurgency - that's not going to happen. we can't accomplish that in most major cities in the US - OK, they aren't using IEDs, but we have some 17000 murders in the USA each year. how safe do you expect Iraq to be?

the news is, that although you want to flame freepers who are simply saying "change the plan" as being anti-military, the changes are coming in 2006. these iraqi forces had better be ready, because they are going to be stood up to protect themselves.

the real interesting part is that when the troop reductions are announced - alot of freepers are going to shout "we are cutting and running". we aren't, the situation has to evolve, we can't just continue losing 50+ soldiers a month driving down roads in convoys. we've got to turn the corner. that's what americans want to see (the hard core Dem nuts aside), its not that they want "instant victory", they want this thing to be in the rear view mirror, not the windshield.

The only freeper I'm 'flaming' is a young fellow who thinks he has all the answers.

I prefer to trust the commanders in the field for what's best there, not somebody in his basement typing at a keyboard.

And I trust the President. Flame away.......

Excellent point, ohio! Americans were still getting killed in Germany by what Rummy likes to call "dead-enders" in 1947.
