New uses for Blackberrrys, PDAs soon
United Press International ^ | August 19, 2005 | Gene Koprowski

CHICAGO, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Phil Hammond carries a PalmOne Treo personal digital assistant with him almost all the time. "It's like carrying my office in my pocket -- I can get my e-mail, my contact list, my notes, even my combination to my locker at the Y," Hammond, marketing director for the Boston-based interior design firm of Margulies & Associates, told UPI's Wireless World. "I am posting this from mine. (Palm One Treo 650)"

I don't know how I lived without my Treo.

Instant access to google or any other research source. I was at a store and price matched another with their website by just pulling it up. Comes in very handy.

I keep current work project info on it in MS Word, Excel, and PDF format.

I have SSH, Telnet, VNC, Windows Term Server, FTP, Ping clients installed...

...and It synchs with my outlook schedule. I can record voice memos, video, or still photos, too.

I have a 2gb SD card in it with about 1.5GB of MP3, and I can also stream shoutcast with it.

I travel a lot, and it's VERY convenient to have all this stuff in one small package.

"I love using our PC, sending and receiving e-mail, surfing but good grief, there is a life worth enjoying that they do not include. How can anyone kick back and relax when they are so accessible. I can see being constantly accessible if your business depends on it."

No more accessible than a cell phone makes you. You can choose to answer or not.

What is great is how accessible it makes information to you... anytime, anywhere.

I travel a lot... I can check my flight schedule in an instant. See a graphic representation of traffic in the city I'm in, and pick a different route.

Can't find the place? I can pull up a google map in a minute.

Carry loads of searchable technical docs in a very small form factor.

Not have to carry a separate camera with me.

Record the spot I parked at in the airport without having to worry about losing a little piece of paper.

Never miss another conf call - it alerts me 15 mins ahead of time.

And again, no more accessible than a pager or cellphone makes you. After all, the desire to talk is in your hands.

"I absolutely agree. My job requires pretty much constant availability at least 3 weeks out of the month- if I didn't have my laptop or my pocket PC I would be hard pressed to get a day out of the office. I can now take my kids to the lake, spend a day with my wife, whatever."

I want to know more. We're required to log on within 30 minutes of a page and we're on call 24/7. I'm tired of being a data slave.

I was on Amtrak last week between DC and NYC and a woman who made call after call on her cell was driving me crazy. And then I thought of a great invention for one of our EE freepers: a hand-held thingy that can burn the battery of a cell phone within 10 feet with the press of a button. Sweet.

Don't let her get you down. She just now told me how she wants a new powerbook. LOL You guys can go to the meetings together.

My Blackberry is the most annoying device ever produced. I get emails from people with questions that all can wait, I do not get paid to be available when I am not in the office, people feel that since I have one I am obliged to respond when ever they have a question. I hate Blackberry's.

Rotating my T5 into landscape display mode then connecting it to a keyboard provides me with a better alternative than furiously scribbling with a stylus.

No, Marty, I had not heard of these...and I'm series. Wish I had one yesterday. I shall consider a purchase, and thanks for the info.

"New uses for Blackberrrys, PDAs soon"

It would be cool if they could invent something that checks spelling. ;-)

Now if they could just invent a tool to make me funny.

I hate Blackberry's.

Somebody on one of the Palm boards disparaged Blackberry's (surprise!) by calling them corporate jewelry, among other things.

I think the T-mobile Sidekick is the best device to post on FR with. When I went out on freeps, I would often post a brief after-action report from mine. Worked great.

The Sidekick has a full keyboard, which makes it easier to use than the Treo, and the display is larger than any of the other cellphone/PDAs.

Unfortunately, T-Mobile service is mediocre in most of the places I've been. If it's good in your part of the world, though, I highly recommend it.

D

Yeah. . .but for me a little jammer that looks like a cell phone to fool those close by.

Now THAT would make millions.

I love my big fat day planner because I can put physical things (like receipts and cds) in it. I keep the boot disks to 2003 and Solaris 8 in mine. That way I can reinstall the operating system or recover the root password without wasting time hunting for disks.

I now use a paper planner myself. The wirebound Franklin-Covey system. I used to be into handhelds but I like laptops. Apple makes a little ibook that's just right.
