Madonna leaves hospital after fall
From correspondents in London
17aug05

AMERICAN pop diva Madonna was today discharged from hospital where she had been treated for injuries suffered in a horse riding accident in southwest England, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The singer had been taken to Salisbury District Hospital in Wiltshire after falling off her horse while celebrating her 47th birthday.

Madonna's spokeswoman, Barbara Charone, earlier said the songstress had broken her collar bone and a hand, and cracked three ribs, but her condition was not serious.

"Madonna fell off a new horse she was riding late this afternoon at Ashcombe House, her country house outside London," Charone said.

The songstress was marking her birthday with her two children, Lourdes, eight, and five-year-old Rocco, as well as her film director husband Guy Ritchie, at their sprawling 1200-acre country estate in Wiltshire, southwest England, when the accident happened.

But one orthopaedic surgeon, Leela Biant, said Madonna's fitness would help her to make a full recovery, noting that this should take about three months.

"You don't treat broken ribs, they heal by themselves," Dr Biant said.

"The fact that Madonna is very fit and healthy will help her recovery and because she does a lot of yoga she will be used to deep breathing," she said.

Dr Biant said, however, that the Material Girl would find it painful to sing during the first couple of weeks.

Madonna has reinvented herself as an English country wife since meeting Ritchie, a celebrated director in his own right with movies such as Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

Who knows why she fell. Doesn't say here what happened, though we learned she's a fairly new rider. Do you ride? Or just make goofy comments about it?

Apparently she is a new rider.... Here's an article I found on Google:

That's terrible that she would be so injured after just starting out...

See the post under yours. I had it wrong - it was Washington. There is a farm there that allows perverts to come in and have sex with the animals. This super pervert was having sex with a horse, and the horse killed him. God is good!

what really wicked me off was that PeTA did not complain about animal abuse. Seriously.

Bizarre.

Yeah - it'll be make or break time to see if she stays in it. Sometimes this takes all the fun out of it.... sometimes it gets taken in stride.

Christopher Reeves was not an accomplished horseman. I saw the tape and he was not that great a rider. The horse was balking towards the jump (only a trained eye would know this) He stood up more in his stirrups and leaned forward more. When, if he would have planted his arse down and drove the horse forward with butt and thigh the horse would have taken the fence. Also, the horse was too small for Reeves. Reeves sucked. Madonna probably sucks too as an equestrian.

The last bad fall I took, I was long trotting down a trail, lots of forward motion and a deer jumped up out of the grass right under the horses nose. The horse was going in the oppisite direction quicker then lightening:) I didn't make the turn.

Eh - everybody's a critic. He was just getting into jumping competition, if I remember, and had a fall anyone ~could~ have.

I wouldn't describe beginner riders abilities as "sucks" especially at the age she is. I didn't start riding till I was 32 and I sucked:) I'm 51 now and still am not that great. I hate seeing people bash beginners. We were all there at one time or another, unless you started as a kid, and even some of them aren't that great. It takes alot of time to learn.

Wait till you take a fall like that at 50. I don't care for Madonna, but I feel for her in this instance. And I know if I had had a fall that serious at the start of my riding experience, I probably would not be riding now.

Not really. His fall would have been prevented had he been trained properly and/or was a better rider. If he had sat down rather than standing up and putting his weight forward that "accident" would not have happened. He had a trainer that smelled money and unfortunately did as many trainers do when they smell money, they encourage the person and tell them how good they are because people like to hear how good they are and trainers like to keep their clients happy.

One of those British horses. A good cow horse won't throw you. You are a team and he/she gets that right from the start. When a good cow horse is well trained, as my Lady was, she'll take you home after a hard day's work and you can take a nap in the saddle on your way home. I miss old Lady but she's eating tall grass, good oats, and green apples where she is now. The problem with Madonna is that she doesn't know how to ride. If she wanted to ride she should have spent some time on a West Texas cattle ranch. You'll learn real quick.

trained properly and/or was a better rider.

You don't think someone can just make a mistake?

One of the draw backs of learning riding is you have to ride to learn. It isn't something you are going to learn by reading about it, or watching, you just have to do it. It requires alot of quick moves that you can only gain thru alot of experience. His fall was more then likely just an unforturnate result of maybe inexperience. That doesn't mean he was a bad rider or wasn't trained properly. IMO:)

Oh, give me a break. A good cow horse is just a likely to throw you in the ground as a British horse.

The problem with madonna is she is a BEGINNER. It happens. Know ones knows what the circumstances were.

Good lord, just because you don't like the lady doesn't mean she has to be an accomplished rider as soon as she starts.

Oooo, let us not call it what it is for we might offend someone. Most beginners suck and those with money to spend usually get on horses they shouldn't be on. They want a beautiful young horse when in fact they shouldn't be on anything under 16 years old, if not older and it should be a push button horse because a 47 year old women learning to ride could not handle a situation. When people suck at something they should know it and then perhaps they wouldn't get hurt.
