Schuurman serves as national director for the The Dougy Center for Grieving Children & Families. The Dougy Center is a grief support program for children and families coping with the death of a family member. As the first grief peer support program of its kind, the Center's model has been replicated in over 140 sites throughout the U.S. and into Australia, England, Jamaica, Japan, Germany, Rwanda and beyond. As chief executive officer, Schuurman is responsible for staffing, management, program development and oversight, strategic planning, financial management, community relations, Board development, fund raising and operational aspects of non-profit center. As group facilitator, she has worked with youth ages 3-19 who had a parent or sibling die and adults who had a spouse or child die. She conducts local, national and international trainings on issues related to children, families, grief and loss, and has served as Expert Witness in court trials relating to the impact of death on children and families.
