What made the big bang bang?

Before the BIG BANG, how did all of the material for the VAST universe get together in a miniscule ball? What put it together and how and why and, here is the biggest question, by WHO or at least by what events? What event or external force would cause that tiny unimaginable pre-BigBang universe? What caused it to expand in a big blast? Did a Big Bang actually occur?
