"My wife is from Laos, she might dispute your assertion!

_____Are you saying that losing 55,000 good soldiers in Southeast Asia was not a sacrifice for an ally?"

You focus on effort, not results. The objective is not to lose men, it is to win, Patton expressed it best. I recall the helicopters departed the roof of the embassy in Saigon in April of 1975. The JCS proposed an air campaign in 1964 that was rejected by MacNamara's whiz kids, it was not until 8 years later that we mounted an effective air campaign, 12 days in December 1972, operation Linebacker II. Effective support of our ally would not have cost us 58,000 good men, LBJ cost us that."

Don't forget the Montagnard tribesmen as well. Most of them were fiercely loyal to the US, but were abandoned to die along with the South Vietnamese govt. Told them that "you can fight on your own now" but then cut them off of most supplies while tidal waves of supplies kept pouring in to the NVA from the USSR and China. We ran, and then Congress stabbed 'em all in the back. Same thing could happen with Israel and Taiwan. Far more likely with Taiwan, but with one terrorist or IRBM delivered nuke Israel might not be considered worth saving.

Nixon had the war won, not by sacrificing 58,000 men, but by using air-power properly in "Linebacker II" rather than a dissipation of means in LBJ's "Rolling Thunder." I once read an interview with an NVA general involved with the Ho Chi Minh trail where he stated that the American air campaign prevented a small percentage of supplies from getting through.

To add insult to injury he added that the anopheles mosquito had a greater effect! That is what happens when we use effort as a yardstick of success. A fraction of the effort expended on the trail achieved far greater results when we mined Haiphong Harbor. We should leverage our efforts such that the results achieved far exceed the sum of our
exertions. Linebacker II did that, LBJ's efforts were outdone by an insect!

The NVA rolled into Saigon on tanks, after the heavily Democrat congress elected in 1974 stabbed our allies in the back. They took out revenge on Nixon upon our allies, million who would lose their lives as a result.
