I thought the writer missed an essential point: that Bush's reply was made whilst engaged in a televised presidential debate. Politics at that level has almost nothing to do with policy; rather, it's connecting with people. Bush adeptly rebuffed Gore's insinuation and avoided Gore's tendency to wallow in wooden, mundane point-counterpoint recitals.
