Thanks to "American Idol," lots of Americans got to know Hugh Laurie last TV season.

Laurie plays the title character in "House," a hospital drama that flashed expansive promise at launch but failed to pick up ratings steam until "Idol" arrived as its lead-in. [snip]Those late-arriving viewers discovered an unlikely hero in Dr. Gregory House, an irascible, pill-popping medical detective whose bedside manner could frighten patients at death's door into robust health.

A native of Britain and the son of a doctor, Laurie was educated at Eton and Cambridge University, where he studied anthropology.

Some of his work for the BBC has aired on American television ("Jeeves and Wooster" ran on PBS' "Masterpiece Theater" in the early 1990s), but he may be best known for roles in films ranging from "Sense and Sensibility" to "The Man in the Iron Mask" to "Stuart Little."

During his interview session with TV critics gathered here for the summer press tour, Laurie flashed wit, charm and a British accent that he hides when he's House.

While Hugh Laurie did a great job as Bertie Wooster, don't forget his wonderful work on the Black Adder series. He is a great actor.

Hugh Laurie is great-- too bad the author didn't know much about his work with Rowan Atkinson and Rik Mayall (and yes, Stephen Frye) in the Blackadder series.

He was fabulous as the Prince Regent.

I can't believe they left out Black Adder.

Laurie is brilliant in House. And was a brilliant comedian in the "Blackadder" and "Jeeves" series. The guy's extremely versatile.

Greg House is what all we amateur curmudgeons aspire to be.

Hugh Laurie.

I caught an ep once. Thought it and Laurie were pretty good.

The addition of Sela Ward (multiple emmy winner and MILF extraordinaire) will make next season intersting - both visually and dramatically!

Hugh Laurie is great

He is one of the best I've ever seen.

Wish he'd make a few movies with good scripts.

Isn't that the guy who was in "Sense and Sensibility".

If so, he was funny!

House has become my second best show just behind NCIS. I caught on half way thru last season. I'm even watching the rerun episodes that I already have seen.

But what am I gonna do about NCIS now that Sasha Alexandra's character took one between the eyes?????

Yes, it was. He was Mr. Palmer, IIRC. Laurie also has played Stuart Little's dad. He's pretty good :)

Sela Ward reached her peek in 'The Fugitive' over ten years ago. The last that I saw of her she was not a MILF anymore, but I hope that she has rebounded and I am wrong.

It has been many years since I have watched a network drama regularly due to the overkill of social messages embedded within. But this show is absolutely wonderful! My wife and I have watched faithfully since the beginning of 2005 and are even watching the reruns over the summer. Hugh Laurie does an outstanding job of being Dr Gregory House. His American accent is better than most Americans! If you hate political correctness, you will love Dr House!

Yes, he was in Sense and Sensibility. House is one of the best shows out there, IMHO.

He rocked in Black Adder, though, and wasn't too bad in "Flight of the Phoenix".

I enjoy the show too. Laurie has the character nailed...not nice, but what is needed.

They are pretty on the money with the medical aspects of things too. (No, I'm not a Dr, but I do drive by 2 Holiday Inns every day to work).

I don't watch network TV at all, but my wife said that when she first watched this, she couldn't stand this guy, but as she kept with it, she really likes this show.

I saw an episode a while back. I was impressed with the acting and the clever medical mystery plot. I wasn't impressed with the resolution, however. The story was about a girl athlete whose illness was revealed to be triggered by a pregnancy. The situation was resolved with an abortion.

I doubt I'll ever be a regular viewer.
