INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The NCAA banned the use of American Indian mascots by sports teams during its postseason tournaments, but will not prohibit them otherwise.
The NCAA's executive committee decided this week the organization did not have the authority to bar Indian mascots by individual schools, committee chairman Walter Harrison said Friday.
Nicknames or mascots deemed ``hostile or abusive'' would not be allowed by teams on their uniforms or other clothing beginning with any NCAA tournament after Feb. 1, said Harrison, the University of Hartford's president.
``What each institution decides to do is really its own business'' outside NCAA championship events, he said.
Guidelines were not immediately available on which logos and nicknames would be considered ``hostile or abusive.''
The NCAA two years ago recommended that schools determine for themselves whether the Indian depictions were offensive.
Among the schools to change nicknames in recent years over such concerns were St. John's (from Redmen to Red Storm) and Marquette (from Warriors to Golden Eagles).
The NCAA plans to ban schools using Indian nicknames from hosting postseason events. Harrison said schools with such mascots that have already been selected as tournament sites would be asked to cover any offensive logos.
Such logos also would be prohibited at postseason games on cheerleader and band uniforms starting in 2008.
I really think one of the schools needs to address this nonsense by showing up in entirely blank uniforms. Maybe dress the cheerleaders with the words "Censored by the NCAA" across their chests.
MASCOT, definition:
A person, animal, or object believed to bring good luck, especially one kept as the symbol of an organization such as a sports team.
worse than a fool, Brand is a certifiable asshole, and I've said so to his face.
you can bet his subhuman paws are all over this ...
I despise Myles Brand.
Just wait until the NCAA declares you can't have references to Christianity in team nicknames and mascots. The ACLU should be all over that one - assisting the NCAA.
Another question, can CBS can the Fighting Illini of Illinois by their nickname and use graphics with referencing the nicknam during the NCAA basketball tournament?
Major General Wally Wojdakowski, USMA 1972, the last of Coach's West Point players on active duty will be (or is)
the new Commanding General of the USA Infantry Center and Commandant of the USA Infantry School, Ft. Benning, Georgia. He remains close friends with Coach and has been the subject of a few articles very positive about Coach and what playing for him meant to him.
Actually, "Fightin' Irish" was first used as an insult by, I think, Northwestern fans (or Michigan). When Rockne was the head coach, Notre Dame was known as The Ramblers. During one away game, opposing fans accused the ND players of "fighting like a bunch of Irishmen." Remember that it was probably just 30 years since "No Dogs or Irish Allowed" signs were removed from respectable establishments. But the best way to get back at your detractors is to take their insults and make them a point of pride.

Go Irish, Beat Panthers!
Actually, you Browns have been ahead of the curve here for a long time. No logo. Just a color. Until, of course, the Mexicans drift that far north and then you've got still another problem.

"Until, of course, the Mexicans drift that far north and then you've got still another problem."
They're already here. And we have the multi-layered problems one would expect. It's just not as severe as what you have in Texas.
Political correctness gone wild.
ABSOLUTELY STUPID
Those calling for the Chief's retirement do not have a clue about what he represents or the respectful manner in which he performs.
I prefer to refer to the Chief as a symbol, not a mascot. Calling him a mascot cheapens what he represents.
He may be a mascot by cold definition, but he is not like any other in all of college sports, and in my opinion should not be lumped in with the rest of them.
LOL!
"mascots who personify the proud heritage of native people."
I'm not a Native American, but when I see a Chicago Blackhawks Indianhead sweater I don't think of unmotivated, drunken Indians. If the P.C. folks get their way, maybe that will be the only image conjured up.
Because it's offensive to all the 16th century samurai out there.

Guns Up Ping
I just hope the pinche' NCAA knows that the "red" in "Red Raiders" is because of our school colors.
Agree totally.
