There is a Jewish tradition based on the OT blessings given to each tribe that while some engage in business they may form a partnership to support others who engage in religious learning. IOW some nurture the physical and some nurture the spiritual well being of the Nation of Israel.

Not to mention the tribe of Levi, Who were completely dedicated to spiritual pursuits and who were subsidized by all the other tribes. Unfortunately, the secularists in Israel don't perceive the importance of having a sector of society devoted solely to spiritual development and see them as leeches.
