If you are serious about San Diego, you would probably be best off renting an apartment near Balboa Park. There are many, many available for rental, and the prices are not bad at all. Besides that, you would be centrally located for the freeways, which are hell during rush hour, and be close to downtown and the airport. Then, there is the park itself, which I love. I drive there every day for my morning run.
