He dropped the bomb so Russia would know we would use it if they tried anything. Truman knew that Stalin was a monster and had to let him know we would not hesitate.

Japan was about to stop the war and surrender...the only thing they objected to was the trial of the emperor.

The emporer was GOD to the Japanese and they were adamant that he not be held for trial.

Truman was later chastised by Eisenhower for dropping the bomb. Eisenhower was aware of all the politics and hated the idea of killing of all the women & children of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Russia was the reason for the nuking of those cities.

i think you are underestimating the Japanese aspect of it. The Japanese treated the Emporer like a god and they would have defended him till the death. Millions of Japanese and American soldiers were saved. The island battles in the Pacific were very deadly and Truman didnt want more of that so he did what needed to be done.

Dear Radioactive,

Did you actually read this article?

It kinda vitiates the claim that the Japanese were about to surrender, or that they just didn't want a trial of the emperor.

The intelligence that this is based on, according the article, was so secret that even the President was not permitted to retain hardcopy of it. It isn't clear that Gen. Eisenhower, even as Allied Supreme Commander, knew of this intelligence.

Fascinating read.

It didn't seem to affect Eisenhower that massive killing of women and children - civilians all - went on in Germany during the bombings there.

A little politics here, don't cha think?
