Because it was eliminating foods your body needs and causing chemical changes in your body. It was a terrible diet. I can't believe that guy was a doctor. Though I noticed he was reportedly quite heavy at the time of his recent death.
Have you read the book?
I'm not dead. Interesting. Wait...maybe I am! No....I just need more coffee....

Nonsense and poppycock.
My body does not NEED sugar or refined white flour. Period. Any nutrients I lack I can easily replace with a trip to GNC or any vitamin shelf.
**EVERYTHING** makes chemical changes in your body. When your body STOPS making chemical changes, then you need to worry, because then you're dead.
Beyond that, you should do some research, and find out what "insulin resistance" is, and how an abused body reacts to carbs, and how it's a vicious cycle, and how lo-carb helps break that cycle. Diabetics know all about it, or should.
Atkins died from a fall, and hitting his head. His lifestyle did not kill him.
oh boy...where do I start...first of all, working in healthcare, doctors recommend Atkins highly for heart patients, diabetics, and patients with high blood pressure. There are at least 50 pages of medical references from doctors who recommend Atkins. You rid your body of sugar and you burn fat...which kills.
Geez, here we go again with the "but Dr. Atkins was fat" war cry. How many other doctors are over the 150 pound mark? The fact is, Atkins died from falling and striking his head on a slippery sidewalk rather than from a heart attack or diabetes.
Mr. M is a diabetic and has high blood pressure. When he sticks to low carbing his numbers are excellent and his doctor lowers or takes him off his meds, but as someone above said we Americans want our fast foods and sugar. He refuses to stay on the diet and the medical problems are back. We know exactly the yo-yo effect is related to carbs and weight.
"Because it was eliminating foods your body needs and causing chemical changes in your body."
Which foods are those? Sugar? High Fructose Corn Syrup maybe? How about Wonderbread?
If you think Atkins was about eliminating all fruits & veggies you are mistaken.
The problem is, many people mistake the failure of business side of Atkin's crappy low carb products with the diet itself. It's the business that failed. The diet works if done correctly.
The reason Atkins failed is because you can go in any large market and buy low carb items for a fraction of what Adkins charged for their products. This is why they are going out of business.
As for the idea of the diet, it works and it is not bad for you, I lost 29 pounds on it and there is nothing wrong with my body from doing it except I am healthier because of the loss of weight.
My understanding is that Dr Adkins died while in a coma and had put on some weight from the long stay in the hospital while in a coma.
