Until we realize that we are at war with the Baathist regime in Syria and the Mullahs in Iran and take the appropriate actions to cause regime changes in those terrorist states we will not be able to win in Iran no matter how much we were to crank up the violence. Sadly we haven't shown the courage to do what needs to be done in those countries. Unless we do we will not win in Iraq. The only good reason I saw when we got into Iraq was to set us up strategically to surround Iran and to have direct access into Syria and then be able to use our position to force changes either by diplomacy or by force.
Sadly diplomacy won't work because our supposed allies, with a couple of exceptions, and our press and left wing have made it extremely difficult to stabilize Iraq to the point where we can use our forces to put enough pressure on Syria and Iran to change their ways. Quite honestly the best I can see coming out of this at this point is an Islamic state that's friendly to the US along the lines of Saudi Arabia which makes me pretty ill. The only way I see this changing is another 9/11 type of attack and I don't see that happening.
There's a reason the terrorists haven't attacked here again and it's not because they couldn't, it's because they see us destroying ourselves.

I also originally thought the reason to be in Iraq was to gain a foothold against Iran and Syria. Maybe it's time to cut off the problem at its source.
