No, but Schmidt should win in a walk. It is interesting to note, I got a lot of mail from both candidates. But I don't live in the district, I live next door in John Boehner's district.

My prediction is Schmidt wins with 60%, which is underperforming for this district.

At least Hackett would know what is going on in Iraq.

I was taking a look over at the DUmpster. One thread turned into a debate about how hackett was campaigning at starbucks and Schmidt was campaigning at Waffle House.

The DUmmies unaminously trashed Waffle House and were debating about starbucks. Some were fans, because of their enviromentally friendly coffee, othere were lamenting that starbucks puts small coffee houses out of business and is corproate evil.

Another thread was that if Schmidt wins with less than 60% it's a big victory, plus the usual Karl Rove is evil knee jerk responses.

Anyway, I think Schmidt will win, but don't take anything for granted and anybody who lives in that district should go out and vote for Schmidt.

Rush is certainly giving this a lot of coverage - that should prompt more conservatives to make it to the polls.

As conservative as this district might be, in a special election, anything can happen with lopsided turnouts possible.

Hackett on the War in Iraq:

War in Iraq
If elected, I will be the only member of Congress to have served in Iraq. I fought in the Fallujah campaign, took part in reconstruction efforts, and worked side-by-side with Iraqi military and civil personnel. I know what’s really happening in Iraq.

The White House has been painting a rosy picture and people aren’t buying it anymore. We all know the outcome is uncertain and there is no exit date. But even now, too many conservatives just want to applaud whatever the administration does. And too many liberals who opposed the war want to see the president’s Iraq policy fail.

I was against the war. It was a misuse of our military that damaged our credibility throughout the world and squandered our political capital. Still, I volunteered to serve, and I have no regrets. But now we need to face the reality of the situation there. Our country has gone to war and every American must share in that responsibility.

The good news is we can successfully exit Iraq once the roughly 140,000 Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) are adequately trained and skilled enough to defend their fledgling government.

The bad news is they are nowhere near the level of skill to accomplish that mission and are likely years away from that goal.

I know this from fighting alongside Iraqis, and training them. They are simply not ready to defend their country against the insurgents that threaten to destroy Iraq’s future.

No matter what your position on the war, if we pull out now the entire region will spiral into chaos and present our nation and military with a far more difficult challenge than we currently face. I don’t relish the prospect of my two sons going over there in twenty years. We need to get it right, and we need to do it now.

The Iraqi people and government are grateful that we eliminated their brutal dictator. They are capable of running their own government and building a democracy. It won’t look like ours; nor should it. But in order for them to succeed, we must not withdraw our troops before the Iraqis are ready to stand on their own.

What's the story with this ex-marine? Did he actually see battle in Iraq? Or was he in the JAG office, as I see he's a lawyer. He calls the President a SOB, if he is still in the reserves he could be charged under the UCMJ. This guy is nothing more than a Kerry clone. Go GOP get out the vote or Pelosi and Reid will have a field day sticking this down our throats.

By my figures, President George W. Bush won the 2nd District of Ohio with 62.30% of the vote:

Adams County 63.78% Bush
Brown County 63.58% Bush
Clermont County 70.67% Bush
Pike County 51.84% Bush
Scioto County 51.87% Bush
Warren County 72.06% Bush

Am I missing something. CNN said Bush won by over 70%.

Special election ping. (How can there possibly be election fraud after everyone takes an oath?) Maybe no results for a few hours -

D-day: It's Hackett or Schmidt
By Barry M. Horstman
Post staff reporter
BOB DICKERSON/The Post

Election official Joe Elsaesser gives the oath to uphold the law to precinct workers in the 5-S precinct in Kilgour School in Hyde Park this morning.

Voters in portions of Hamilton County will go to the polls today to elect a new member of Congress and to decide two local tax levies.

The polls will be open throughout Ohio from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. In Hamilton County, voters uncertain of where to vote or who experience other Election Day problems may contact the board of elections at 632-7000.

In today's special 2nd Congressional District race between Republican Jean Schmidt and Democrat Paul Hackett, the victor will replace former U.S. Rep. Rob Portman, R-Terrace Park, who resigned earlier this year to accept President Bush's cabinet-level appointment as U.S. trade representative. The seven-county district stretches from eastern Hamilton County and southern Warren County east to Portsmouth.

Schmidt, a former two-term state representative from Clermont County who won a contentious 11-candidate GOP primary in June, has firmly aligned herself with Bush in her campaign, saying that, if elected, she would "stand proudly and solidly with the president" on most major issues. In a heavily Republican district that Bush carried by a 2-to-1 margin last November, that stance has obvious political advantages for Schmidt, president of Right to Life of Greater Cincinnati.

Hackett, an Indian Hill lawyer and Marine Corps reservist who returned from a tour of duty in Iraq in March, has dismissed Schmidt as a "rubber stamp for failed policies" in Washington and Columbus. At one of Hackett's final rallies Saturday in East Walnut Hills, former U.S. Sen. Max Cleland of Georgia said that the race comes down to a "choice between the right stuff and the right-wing stuff."

Two issues also will appear on the ballot in parts of Hamilton County.

In Mount Healthy, voters will decide whether to renew a tax levy that would be used for street repairs and construction. If the five-year, 1.5-mills levy is approved, Mount Healthy residents would pay 15 cents for every $100 of property valuation.

And in the Three Rivers Local School District, officials are seeking a new 4.95-mills operating levy that would cost a homeowner $144 annually for a $100,000 house. The levy, a reduction of earlier failed levies - 12 mills in March 2004 and 5.95 mills last November - would generate $1.9 million annually for three years.

The two previous defeats forced district officials to cut expenses. Critics, however, argue that deeper cutbacks are needed because of the district's declining enrollment.
