The implied answer, of course, is no, the Enlightenment culture without the firm foundation of Europes roots in Christianity can only devolve into a pseudo and dogmatic religion, ultimately restrictive of freedom.
It is not at all surprising that the Pope wouild like to return to a pre-Enlightenment culture, in which the Church had more power.
What I find baffling is his suggestion that Christianity before the Enlightenment was not dogmatic or restrictive of freedom.
