Serious question, is the exhaust from the solid rocket boosters "environmentally friendly"?

Hell no!
Its main constituent is the dreaded Hydrogen Dioxide!

So then using a non-freon based insulation on the liquid fuel tank is another case of being penny wise and pound foolish.

Too bad this PC nonsense has cost us so much in time, money, capability, and more important, lives.

Best Regards

The exhaust from the main engines is almost purely Hydrogen Dioxide, but the same is not true of the that from the SRBs. They put out a nasty mix of stuff that you wouldn't want to breath, even after it had cooled and been diluted a bit.

"The propellant is an 11-point ((astronomy) a celestial body of hot gases that radiates energy derived from thermonuclear reactions in the interior) star-shaped perforation in the forward motor segment and a double-truncated- (Cone-shaped mass of ovule- or spore-bearing scales or bracts) cone perforation in each of the aft segments and aft closure.

"This configuration provides high thrust at ignition and then reduces the thrust by approximately a third 50 seconds after lift-off to prevent overstressing the vehicle during maximum dynamic pressure.

HO2? didn't you mean "dihydromonoxide"? (which would be true of the mains, but not the SRBs)
