They didnt, They showed themselves to be ripe for terrorism and the terrorists have ripened. They have no one to blame but their cowardly leaders. You show a bully you are scared and that bully will have his fun with you.
Wrongo sarge.
We lost the support of historic allies when we retreated from Afganistan when we were on bin Laden's back porch, We had almost universal support when we were actively pursuing those that had shamefully invaded us on 9/11. We lost that support when we dumbfoundingly disengaged and insanely resumed operation Desert Sand.
I submit the following:
Shortly after Sept. 11, he (Chancellor Gerhard Schröder) pledged unconditional political and military support for the Bush administration's war on terror. He cited both Germany's commitment to the United States and its national interest in combating terrorism, knowing that for the first time since World War II the country could be entering a war.
Two months later, when the call came from Washington requesting specific German assistancea deployment of 3,900 troopsSchröder did not flinch. He took it to the parliament in Berlin and won approval for the deployment after a tense political struggle, in which he tied the issue to a vote of confidence in his government and thus pushed his agenda through in a show of strength.

Just look at all the "progress" we've made since that fateful decision to invade Iraq! Show an ally you've gone bonkers and watch how fast he abandons you!
Your thesis ignores a good many facts. It just so happens we were right to go into Iraq--Saddam had been supporting terrorists for years, including some of the ones responsible for 9/11. This has been documented both in the 9/11 report and in Stephen Hayes' book, "The Connection." (Also subsequent articles, many posted on Free Republic.)
Even without that particular evidence, the most cursory of glances at Grampa Dave's list of terrorist attacks should make it apparent to even the most dense of Freepers that they were on the attack long before we ever entered Iraq--even before the first Gulf war.
No, I lay the blame squarely where it belongs: in the laps of those who think they must kill anyone who is not a Muslim until they achieve their goal of an Islamic world.
People like you only help them.
Ahem. You seem to be ignoring that the Senate Intelligence Report states that it is likely, based on multiple intelligence reports, that some of the 9/11 hijackers trained at Salmon Pak in Iraq.
Add to that the fact that Iraq had an alliance with Al Qaeda for weapons development and attacks against the West, and you have an explosive situation if not handled properly.
I'm rather thinking that you may well be one of those freepers who would be complaining if we get attacked again that we didn't handle Iraq in a timely fashion.
I am sorry to hear you support Saddam Hussein and his reign of terror on the Iraqui people.
In fact Afghanistan was only a small part of 911, In fact we should have gone to saudi Arabia, but their oil saved them. We did the next best thing and remember even Bill Clinton Democrats at one time believed in WMD.
This will come as quite a shock to the 20,000-odd troops still fighting and dying on "BinLaden's front porch."
