I live in NYC and I have friends who are cops.

They totally hate this, and think this is one of the dumbest things they have ever been asked to do.

they had better start taking it more seriously - because telling citizens to "report suspicious people" and call an 800 number, is about 100 times dumber then having the police be watchful and picking out people to search.

In N.Y. I think it would be safer for the community if the cops went around checking diplomatic crates, boxes, and pouches, not to mention diplomats. (dogs from the U.N.)

But the London bobbies are apparently on the job.

maybe your "friends the cops" would rather pick up pieces of human flesh and place them in an evidence bag?
hmmmmmmm

quite the contrary, although I don't believe a word you said about cops not wanting to "protect and serve" by checking bags; the "dumbest thing" I've heard is your post!

How about start training a bunch of bomb-sniffing dogs? Park a couple, with handlers, at every entrance to the subway, or any other pinch-point.

Do they have any thoughts on more effective tactics? Perhaps they need to express those thoughts to their commanders.

Yeah its pretty dumb allright. Why not just watch as a suicide bomber walks in with his bomb? Geez are the NY cops really that stupid?

I live there too. I am willing to let it play out for a while before I get hot and bothered. I don't want to fault the average cop with anything...he/she didn't make the policy....what are the policy makers thinking? So let's wait and see before we catch a dose of kvetchitis.

Took the subway twice. No bag stop.

I did notice people looking around and checking out each other more closely than usual.

Im gonna get a t-shirt for the Subway that says
"I consent to shooting terrorists dead on sight"

Then they're not real cops if they cannot defend their people.
