Washington, DC -- The Smithsonian says it has found a trove of photographs from the famous Scopes Monkey Trial.
A historian at the Washington institution says the "stunning photographs are the discovery of a lifetime."
There are about 60 unpublished photos from the landmark 1925 Tennessee trial over teaching evolution in school.
One photo shows Clarence Darrow challenging William Jennings Bryan in the trial.
Darrow represented biology teacher John Scopes, who was charged with teaching evolution. Bryan prosecuted the case, gaining a conviction.
The photos were taken by the managing editor of Science Service, who covered the case.
What makes them the discovery of a lifetime? Because they picture a perpetual presidential candidate?
thanks!
Was Spencer Tracy in any of them?

My reply to that....
"Then get a life!"
These are historically significant because it was an early example of a Democrat hack trying to ram junk science down our throats through the use of the courts.
Now, of course, it's done all the time. But back then, it was pretty novel.
I guess it would be the discovery of a lifetime for a historian who researches the Scopes trial. Otherwise, ya got a bunch of old courtroom pictures.
Pictures of a prominent Democrat defending the Bible? When are you going to see THAT again?
Picture-perfect ping.
did it reveal that scopes actually had a tale?
er, tail. DOH!
I think this whole incident was hardest on the monkey.
Very good.
Does anyone know if the Monkey got off?
He's still teaching.
Backround to the Scopes trial here.

Bryan was a big supporter of the income tax, and a supporter of the amendment to have popular election of US Senators. All in all, I'd consider him a negative influence.
