Allow me.

From a quick web search:
"May 10, 1775 - American forces led by Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold capture Fort Ticonderoga in New York. The fort contains a much needed supply of military equipment including cannons which are then hauled to Boston by ox teams. "

That is more than a year prior to the Declaration of Independence. All such American forces were in rebellion against a tyrannical government. All would have been considered criminals by that same government. The "British", as we now refer to what was "our" government at the time, were forced to remove the navy from Boston Harbor, abandoning previously occupied Boston. This was accomplished by rebels armed with government cannon taken by force from a government base.

The Second Amendment was our Founders effort to ensure that their decendants would not have to defeat a standing army in order to arm themselves. Our Founders would tremble at the situation as it now exists.
