Just wondering - why did you cut off the top of the sign in your photo???? Was there something there you didn't want us to see?And just where are YOU looking? I see nothing removed from the top of the sign, and the only rule about cigarettes mentioned is Rule #11.

Just a little info here, I gave shelion the short version. We have been on this beach about a half dozen times, the latest being the 4th of July celebration and people were smoking everywhere!!!! They always have - 8 days later we were "attacked" for smoking????
any explanations for that?

Damn right. And don't even get me started on gay sex habits! At least smokers usually drop dead from strokes and heart attacks - or maybe a case of lung cancer that lasts for a year or two.
(You sound like a little 14-year-old boy. Did you hear that the man who started the Great American Smoke-Out just died? He was 82, never smoked. But guess what? He still died).
The average life span of a homosexual is 42 years.
The life span of a smoker is 62 and up. Death by smoking is never a guarantee. So, if you want to commit suicide, don't start to smoke. More people die of other causes in their old age then what they do if they just smoke.

Non-smokers tend to flatulate and whine more than smokers. You're disgusting. My hubby was a Viet Nam Combat Vet and he smoked. He never whined. As for passing gas, he had more class about himself then that.
It matters not if a man smokes, but having class means everything.
You have any?

Since there is no sign prohibitting smoking and Rule #11 clearly states cigarette butts are to placed in the trash receptacle, anyone with a room temperature IQ would logically deduce that smoking is permitted.

It's a shame your camera didn't have a time/date stamp on it.......I don't see what the fuss is all about - if there is no sign prohibiting smoking but a posted rule for removing cigartte butts.
I'm not a lawyer, but that seems to be a no-brainer to me.
BTW - Welcome aboard!

Just wanted to let you know that the top of the sign was Winthrop Beach. I am the one this happened to! The only thing that is "hidden" here is the fact they changed an original ORDINANCE dated June 12th 1989 and did not follow the rules of procedure to change an ordinance. The rules for change are clearly stated in the "Grant Of The Powers Of The Town" under the Constitution and laws of the State of Maine!!!Puffin! Welcome to Free Republic and thanks for coming in! As you can see, we have some doubting Thomas's, but that's ok.
Like I keep saying: if Winthrop Beach went smoke free, they need to post a sign. Not jump on unsuspecting smokers like a deer in bright lights.
This is a control issue and it's not about health.

I am not against smokers, just the obnoxious, toxic substance that they expel from their lungs into the faces of others.Into the faces of others?
When was the last time ANY smoker blew smoke in your face? I mean stepped right up and exhaled their smoke right into your face?
No, you're not against smokers, NOOoooooooo. /sarcasm

And without a doubt. If Rule# 11 states that cigarette butts will be disposed of, then one would naturally assume that smoking is permitted at this beach.
But to have a cop come and tell the family they had to "leave" because someone was smoking is absurd. If there is no smoking at the beach, post a damn sign! How hard can it be?

I figured I'd pick "puffin" as a pun. Puffin is excepted as the state bird - and thats the only exception to "puffin" in Maine. :)

You may be right but the closeup that you can read does not show the first few rules.

Awful, sheesh, this is why I hate it when taxpayers buy all the parklands....then the state can make it illegal to do anything considered politically correct.
To: Nov3; puffin
You may be right but the closeup that you can read does not show the first few rules. It's an old sign. Most of us have seen these signs before. They just state "no pets allowed." "No glass containers," etc.
If any of the rules above stated no smoking, surely Rule #11 would never even mentioned cigarette butts disposal.
