I bet Catholic adoption agencies receive funds also...although I doubt the Catholics descriminate against other Christians.
They did not discriminate against me when I sought their assisstance with adoption and I am not Catholic. The adoption didn't take place for other reasons but the Catholic agency was very helpful.
They are the only agency locally that I am aware of that is doing something positive about the abortion abomination. They council teens not to abort but to let the baby live and they will care for it and find it a home.
They get this Baptists donations.
In fact, here in PA, Catholic Charities welcomes a variety of denominations into their programs. With no push to convert.
We have friends, Baptist preacher and his wife, who are awaiting their bundle of joy as I type.....from Catholic Charities.
They said Catholic Charities was the most positive and supportive of all the agencies they contacted.
"although I doubt the Catholics descriminate against other Christians."
Catholics most assuredly discriminate against other Christians, and they have for centuries.
I am a direct descendant of French Huguenots who were dragged from their home onto the street, where their throats were slit (somewhat like victims of islamic terrorists). If a 14-year-old son had not escaped, I wouldn't be here.
The Vatican issued a special medal and congratulations to the perpetrators of these and thousands of other murders at the time. As far as I know, there never has been an apology, although they have apologized to just about everyone else.
Nonetheless, if I were running an adoption agency, I would certainly place children with healthy Catholic families, and also Jewish families. The good of the child is the main concern.
At the same time, it is up to the agency. If they are doing the work, they should get to set their own policy, short of placing children in dangerous situations.
If Catholics did discriminate, I would be fine with that. If I wanted Catholic parents for my baby, I should get Catholic parents. Hence my going through a Catholic agency.
Let them discriminate. There are tons of options for agencies. I am a former adoption social worker and I know.
I'm evangelical, and would want evangelical parents if I was a birthmother.
so be it....
Catholics have always known where we stood in this country.......
just wait till the next Baptist is running for office...want to bet how quick he courts the Catholic vote?
I don't know if you would call it discrimination, and you would have to check with each agency's policy, but I would bet that most Catholic adoption services try to cater pretty much to Catholic families. I, myself (as well my younger brother and sister) was adopted through a Catholic adoption service and I'm pretty sure that they worked strictly with Catholics. That being said, that was over 40 years ago, so things may have changed.
I don't think this has so much to do with whether or not the adoption agency's mission statement conflicts with Catholic teaching, as it may be that some parts of Catholic doctrine conflicts with what Protestant denominations believe.
