I don't think you're stretching at all, FW. I wish I knew more about the symbolism within islam, but I know that jihad is symbolized by a black flag. This seems like more of a "priestly" garb than the others, which seemed more businesslike, or even casual. If so, he may be speaking as more of a spiritual leader than a political leader here, in which case, it is very bad. Spiritual stuff tends to lead toward the more violent acts (in direct contradiction of what most of us adhere to).
Initial thoughts only, so I welcome refutation, enhancement, and clarification, as always.
