Interesting article. Even more interesting when meshed with the other things that China is doing ...for example initiating a rather ambitious submarine crew training regimen, or for that matter certain training exercises whereby they had MLRS missile systems on Cargo ships and would practice firing them en masse (I have some pics of that, although the question is why would anyone need to train on the use of MLRS systems on cargo ships ....unless ofcourse it was to practice a stratagem whereby cargo ships could be used as one-use first-strike platforms against harbor targets). Anyways, enjoy.

However large their navy becomes, they'll never match our coed crews, our pregnancy rates nor our day care centers.

The People’s Liberation Army Navy recently introduced two domestically designed and built....

Are they an army or a navy?

Any bets on whether they had help from Chinese immigrants working in our laboratories, factories and shipyards? Any bets on help from Clinton's ilk? I didn't think so, all you Freepers see threats where there are threats.

Terrible headline.

It is not an Aegis destroyer, simply because it has an Aegis-like radar system.

Aegis-like could mean many things...it could mean they have a comparable yet inferior system or it could mean that they simply made a system that operates like the Aegis system - but it could be relative junk.

The ChiComs understand that it is the US NAVY that projects American power into the Pacific and South East Asia.

They plan to fight us and win.

They are serious about going to WAR with us.

They are serious about winning.

The outcome is not certain.

It is certain our children will have to deal with the ChiComs, unless we take care of business.

I hope the Commies spend all their cash and build 100 of them. Nice easy targets for our Missiles. Radar is great, it tells you how many missiles are coming to kill you. But you can always shoot more missiles faster than the ship can respond too. Go China.

See the Movie Deterrence.

It what these ships don't have will have them destroyed in two minutes.

Vampires can kill you. Also, there are different types of stealth and detection technologies that a fleet system must have.

They must have anti-ship-missile capability. Otherwise, this is just a target ship for the first 5 or 6 incoming missiles.

And there are other threats besides sea skimming missiles.

Even a theoretical high flying missile they could not stop. Such a missile might deploy 5 or 6 guided bombs from 50,000 feet a mile away.

And the combination of 5 or 6 incoming sea skilling missiles and 5 or 6 high flying missiles leaves few alternatives.

Vampire attack was something that was used in the cold war in the 1980's.

The US has both Aegis Cruisers, Destroyers, and also frigates, besides aircraft carriers as well as other ships.

A high flying E2C or AWACS could monitor the attack and aid it at a stand off distance, as well as perhaps unknown UAV's.

And that does not even begin to introduce what has to be done for ECM.

Then another type of sea skimming missile could be launched that drops a torpedo at a standoff distance.

Now you have underwater threats, high altitude threats, and ultra low altitude threats.

And then that does not even take into account other types of sneaky ways to attack the rapidly sinking Chinese Junk.

(I wonder why they call Chinese boats junks?)

Must be all that technology we offshored to them that they were too stupid to figure out.

"complicates planning"

Yep. Now our SSNs have to fire off two torpedos before the CVNs sweep the sea.

Suppose these new naval capabilities will be found in the new Defense Dept. Report coming up?

Congress Demands Pentagon Report on China
By GOPAL RATNAM, Defense News, 7/08/2005

Ten U.S. lawmakers are demanding that the Pentagon submit its annual report on Chinese military capabilities to Congress as soon as possible.

In a July 1 letter to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Rep. Randy Forbes, R-VA, and nine other members of the House of Representatives, both Democrats and Republicans, complain that the report — due to Congress on March 1 every year — hasn’t been delivered yet.

“Congress requires the annual report on the military power of the People’s Republic of China to execute its constitutional responsibilities,” the lawmakers wrote. “Additional delay will impair Congress’ ability to perform those oversight duties.”

Forbes is the co-chairman of the newly formed China caucus, created to focus Congress’ attention on China’s rise as an economic and military power. Seven other signatories of the July 1 letter are also members of the caucus.

The National Defense Authorization Act of 2000 requires the Pentagon to submit an annual report of its assessment of Chinese military capabilities.

"The annual DoD China Military Power report required by Congress is not yet ready for release, but we expect to be completed with it soon,” one defense official said July 7.

The official said a team of intelligence experts within the Pentagon is preparing the report by drawing on several in-house and outside resources.

In recent weeks, senior Bush administration officials, including Rumsfeld and Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, have raised questions about China’s military modernization.

"Since no nation threatens China, one must wonder: Why this growing investment? Why these continuing large and expanding arms purchases?" Rumsfeld said in a June 4 address to a security conference in Singapore, organized by the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
