I think that's the way it's usually done. "Pulling the tubes" is just a metaphor so that the reader understands what's happening.

Better they run in some grape Kool-Aid, Jonestown style and be done with it. Taking hydration and nutrition away from the patient is just as much an act of killing as a lethal injection.
