The real issue was that the tribes involved did not want to be outed at having ancestors who came from another continent. There was fear that it might disrupt their claim to "native" status.

Tammy Bruce had a very interesting section on this in her book " The New Thought Police". Based on the examination of the skull it seems the remains are most likely of Polynesian or similar orgin.
