If you have no desire to attend Mass and teach your children the faith, don't expect the Church to do it all for you.

Sounds as if there's a good chance the parents themselves were not effectively taught the faith (given that they were probably born during the worst turmoil in the church, not surprising), though they retain enough to want their children to have some. It doesn't sound like much help to deny the children any instruction (at the same time reducing their chances of making friends who do go to church, one time peer pressure might do some good).

Do you think God probably doesn't want them anyway?

Funny you should say that.. I am afraid to tell you that there is God outside the Catholic Faith....

And He does want them...
