Car trunks are not airtight so why couldn't the kids have survived several days?

Out in the sun it could get pretty darn warm in there, and hot air built up inside the windowed part of the car would migrate behind the back seats into the trunk.

True...I hadn't considered that. However, that really begs the question as to why someone wouldn't hear the kids crying out for help.

On a really hot day, it wouldn't take long for 3 kids in a trunk to pass out...
