Perhaps he was embarrassed that he left her alone, on the beach.

When it was clear that she had met with foul play, he and the two Kalpoes should have come clean. Instead, they kept lying, which is why all their motives are suspicious.

This is an Agatha Christie novel - except that Natalee is a daughter, a sister and a young woman who is still missing. Nothing else matters.

See there. All someone has to do, is believe that Joran is telling the truth, and a case could be made that Natalee actually did disappear off the beach. Witness hears a screaming girl, no one pays attention to the report? Why? Are there that many screaming girls on the beach in Aruba late at night?

That said, there's a huge piece of this puzzle missing that NONE of us have hit on. It's as tho we are being led in one direction, when it's really another. Strange.
