I would think someone would notice if his hands were unusually red, scratched and chafed the day after he was with a girl who went missing.

Then he would have needed access to a boat. I'm not sure about Aruban waters, but navigating Cayman waters at night is d-i-f-f-i-c-u-l-t, given the barrier reefs.
