Brigette, if they were using GSM phones the system is slightly different, and can work in the 800, 900, 1800, and 1900 bands. Although GSM is global, different continents use different frequency bands for which GSM runs under. For that reason, certain phones which are made for one region are not compatible with another due to frequency limitations. The Motorola V600 and V620, which my wife and I use for America and Russia have quad-band capabilities which allows users to use the phone anywhere GSM is located. Quad-band GSM technology gives you the ability to stay in touch worldwide, whether you're in Chicago, Cannes or Caracas. Provided a SIM card from a local service provider is put in. We use T-Mobile in the US and MegaFon in Russia, and have SIM cards for both.

Yes... but GSM can be traced just like the others, right?

We are talking about if they can trace Joran cell calls to trace which towers he was connecting to on the island?

There are at least 15 towers on island

(we aren't talking about Natalee's cell phone)
