I find that learning "high" kicks is worthless in a real life situation.  That is why I like Krav Maga, it's all below shoulder and they teach you how to take an opponent out fast.

I'm very pugnatious. The Mrs. says she loves it when I fight because I mellow out sooooo much...
I performed my high brown kata in front of 200 people, most of whom were much better at it than me. Their presence was not a big deal. My nearly screwing up a couple of times was. Ahem.

When I was going for my green I froze temporarily and had to restart the Kata.  I was embarrassed but got thru it.  During the sparring session I had to take on 6 people (2 of them Black Belts) at once, so I did not have too long to dwell on it.

Ow. Six at once.
We have a sparring game called "bull in the ring." Everyone present--at all levels--count off and form a random ring around a single individual. The instructor then calls off numbers in no special order, and the person holding that number attacks the one in the center.
It's rough, but one learns to "see in all directions at once," as the code says.
Sounds like your six-on-one session.

HA! Try getting a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. 10 to 15 years of consistent training, on average.

Royce Gracia. Okay, I know who not to face in a fight. I'll end up getting armbarred or choked out in about 20 seconds.

Yeah, pretty much the same, obviously they don't all rush at once or it would be a very quick match.  It's a good exercise because you have no idea when or where the next attack will come from or how many will attack from a different direction.

Anyway, my office hours were over 45 minutes ago, so I'm off home to have lunch.

Have a jolly, slapping-good day

Here's a place in Walled Lake, MI - mapquest says it's about 12 minutes from West Bloomfield.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai and Mixed Martial Arts:

How close is that?

By the way, don't let the fact that the BJJ classes are led by two brown belts put you off - they both have over 8 years training in BJJ and Angelo is a pro No Holds Barred fighter.

Good luck.

Ah. All good stuff. I'm a brown in American Kenpo, myself (the Ed Parker->Huk Planas variety). If I can keep up the training regularly, I could test for the black in maybe a year and a half. Since I've gotten to the higher intermediate levels, although we spar all the time at close to full contact, I've never had the occasion to test the skills out in real life. Sounds like these happy slapping losers would be a good and emotionally rewarding opportunity, if it ever comes to the US.

The thing that is left out, mysteriously, is that these are hate crimes. It's almost always black kids in England doing this to white people.

WHY IS THIS NEVER MENTIONED? hmmm...

They must be new, the closest one to me back then was a long way.  Walled Lake is about 10 minutes from me.  I am going to look into this as soon as I get back in 2 weeks from a business trip to New Jersey.

THANKS!!

My thoughts exactly, I have only had 2 opportunities to use my training in a real life situation and this would have filled the void nicely.

The hell with Karate. I've taken 4 years of boxing, 8 of Jiu-Jitsu when I was a kid, got 3 belts up in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program, 2 years of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and been in more than my share of barfights.

But the only thing I would bring to one of those kids is that afternoon in Baghdad....
