LOS ANGELES -- Rhett Butler said it best -- "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn."
That parting shot in 1939's "Gone With the Wind" topped the list of the American Film Institute's best quotes from American movies.
Clark Gable's line beat out a pair of Marlon Brando classics -- "I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse" from "The Godfather" and "I coulda been a contender" from "On the Waterfront."
Judy Garland's realization in "The Wizard of Oz" -- "I've got a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore" -- was fourth.
In fifth place was "Casablanca" and Humphrey Bogart's "Here's looking at you, kid."
"Casablanca" led the list with six quotes.

Here are a couple of my favorite from
Star Wars I (1977):
"A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away..."
"I've got a bad feeling about this."

The entire opening monologue, and other gems, Sgt. Hartman,(R. Lee Ermey), delivered in "Full Metal Jacket". That was about the most intense opening of a movie until "Saving Private Ryan" came along.

I don't know about you, but my favorites didn't make the list #1. Jack Nicholson as "Colonel Jessep" in "For a Few Good Men".
"You can't handle the truth!
"You can't handle the truth" did in fact make the list.

I am shocked, SHOCKED that Claude Rains line about gamblng in Casablanca is not included. You can hear that one at least once a month on the Sunday morning talk shows. It was shown in one of the many clips of the movie and they pointed out that practically every word of Casablance makes the list every time. I believe there are four on this current list? (I'm not going to bother checking right now).

What about, "I'd love to kiss ya but I just washed my hair" - Betty Davis. They played that clip last night.
In addition to the quotes on the list, they played lots of clips from the various movies that have made past lists.

"We don't need no stinking badges" Not totally sure, but I believe the misquote comes from Mel Brook's Blazing Saddles.

Two of the most quoted movie lines were never actually said in movies. "Play it again, Sam" and "We don't need no stinking badges" are misquotes...That was pointed out in the program, too.
