"Great actor" my left...
He's done some good performances, but he's overrated as an actor. When have you seen him in a movie and not thought "that's Tom Cruise acting"? The great actors (DeNiro, Pacino, Streep), you don't sense they are acting.

Hoffman probably has the best range of any living actor.
I'd have to say Cruise is better than Kevin Costner, though.

A trained monkey can act. Acting is the most overrated, grotesquely overpaid "profession" on the planet. All you have to be is pretty, at the right place at the right time, and it's not who you know, it's who you ... hence the
F ilm A ctors G uild. Oh yah, and a card carrying member of the liberal/socialist/communist movement helps too.
