The London premiere of "War of the Worlds" turned into a war of words after Tom Cruise was squirted in the face by a man posing as a reporter.
Four men were released on bail after being arrested and were ordered to return to a police station Monday.
The actor was outside a movie theater in central London's Leicester Square on Sunday doing press interviews when a man squirted him with a water pistol disguised as a microphone, London's Metropolitan Police said.
Cruise initially appeared to laugh at the incident but then asked the prankster: "Why would you do that?"
As the man gave a barely audible excuse, Cruise said: "Do you like thinking less of people, is that it?" The prankster tried to walk away but Cruise reached across the metal barrier, held his arm and said: "Don't run away. That's incredibly rude. I'm here giving you an interview and you do that ... it's incredibly rude."
The actor grew increasingly irritated and told the man: "You're a jerk." Footage of the incident appeared on Sky News TV on Monday.
Police detained the man who squirted Cruise and arrested three other men who filmed the incident. The four were working on a new comedy show for British television station Channel 4 in which celebrities are the targets of practical jokes.
Police released the men on bail several hours later and ordered them to return to a central London police station on Monday, when they may be charged with assault, the police spokesman said.
Actress Katie Holmes, who recently got engaged to Cruise, was at the premiere but not by his side at the time of the incident.
One man's prank is another's assault.
"Why would you do that? Why would you do that? Why would you do that?"
I thought you were thirsty Guvnor
I don't blame the prankster. I blame his unaudited thetans.
The sad thing is it probably will be prosecuted further than a similar attack on a politician (except maybe a head of state) would.
We saw this on TV last night. The guy really was rude, but Cruise handled it awfully. He could have said something witty that showed the man to be what he was. Instead, he allowed himself to work up into a major hissy fit that made him look like the real jerk. The other guy appeared to see that he shouldn't have done what he did and turned away. Cruise appeared to be saying "I've condescended to talk to you little people and I'm not treated with all the respect I royally deserve."
Cruise handle himself great! A classy man...
Wow, at the top of his life, he's engaged again to a new beau, and this stuff happens, kind of a slap in the face?
Wonder how Tom feels about the pie throwing stunts aimed at conservatives...
Actually after seeing the way he mingles with the crowd last week, I was saying it was a pretty crazy thing to do, and here you go, he got attacked...Someone showed how easily it was to throw something in his face.. That could have easily been acid instead of water, or a bullet.
To be fair to Tom Cruise (I can't believe I just said that) but I would have been pretty P.O'd if someone did that to me. The chicken reporter should have tried that with Russell Crowe.
Second that. He did a good job of maintaining his cool. Sean Penn would have handled it differently.
"Cruise handled himself great ! A classy man"
I thought Scientogists were supposed to be serene.
This goes to show that Cruise is kind of a mess when he finds himself in situations that publicists are not able to control.
I predict his PR man set it all up.
I'm not a huge Cruise fan, but to do this was extremely cruel.
