Still don't quite get how all these intelligent scientists can lack the common sense to realize that the earth is not static. Forests will become deserts and deserts will become forests.

I'm sure they do know that. What's different now is that some of the changes (at least the trends) can allow prediction of future states and suggest possible mitigation strategies. That's a good role for science and scientists.
