Will it be Romney in 2008?
WorldNetDaily ^ | 6/16/2005 | Rusher

the one that stands out a mile is Mitt Romney. He made his initial reputation by taking over the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City when they were staggering under a bribery scandal and a $400 million debt and turning the event into an ethical and financial triumph. As governor of Massachusetts, he inherited a $3 billion deficit and balanced the state's budget without a tax hike. He is battling the state Supreme Court's ruling in favor of gay marriage by supporting both state and federal constitutional amendments barring them.

Here's an article about the budget from a conservative site: http://www.massnews.com/2005_editions/5_may/50305_ROmney_predicts_surplus.htm I would look up more but I don't have time now. House Majority Leader John Rogers (D-Norwood), former Ways and Means chairman, argued during the House’s budget debate last week that the budget remains structurally imbalanced due to the state’s continued reliance on one-time revenues. He said the revenue spike is due mainly to increases in capital gains taxes, estate taxes and bonus payments. Approving a tax cut at this time would be “fiscally reckless.”

I know a lot of Utah Mormons who wouldn't vote for Romney if he was the only candidate on the ballot. He's about as socially conservative as Arnold Schwarzenegger or Rudy Giuliani, and most Utah Mormons would have a hard time voting for either one of them too.

If Romney is the candidate in 2008, watch for the Democratic candidate to receive the highest relative proportion of the Utah vote of any Democratic candidate in recent memory. Even a liberal Democrat can win in Utah if enough LDS voters stay home on election day.

I still say Romney would be a formidable candidate. He is conservative, he opposes abortion, he opposes (and has led the fight against) gay marriage. He would bring moderate voters (blue states) to the table, as well as the upper midwest with Michigan. The mormon thing really shouldn't hurt him. He is smart, handsome, and has money.

08 is a long ways away.

From NRO today.....

Mass Appeal
06/16 09:51 AM
Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney is set to make his third fundraising visit to California tomorrow. It’s the first major California fundraiser Romney has taken part in since talk started of his possible 2008 White House campaign. Romney will speak before 1,000 individuals at the Orange County GOP’s Flag Day dinner, which is expected to raise $300,000 for the county party.

Orange County GOP Chair Scott Baugh said:

''We in Orange County are intrigued by Governor Romney, most notably because he's a conservative governor getting elected in a blue state and governing well in a blue state."

I used to love William Rusher when he took on Tom Branden, or whoever was in the Left seat, on Crossfire in the 80s.
It just seems that when RR passed on many conservatives' sense did likewise.

You are totally right. Romney's father was governor of Michigan for years; he was a liberal. I suspect his son is the same, given his record. The MSM will love him, along with McCain. We need to be very careful about whom we nominate in '08. Watch out for the liberals in conservative clothing.

"Those red staters are gonna vote for Hillary????? "

No they're going to support a Conservative (social & fiscal)
in the primaries. Romney can't win the primaries.
