China denies aircraft carrier rumor
China daily ^ | June 16, 2005

China is not building an aircraft carrier in Shanghai, said a senior defense industry official at a news conference held by the State Council Information Office in Beijing Thursday.

"I don't know where your news come from. As a leader in charge of the industry, I know nothing about that. I can make it clear to you that there is no such thing, " said Zhang Guangqin when asked to comment on a rumor that China is building aircraft carriers in Shanghai.

China will speed up the upgrading of navy weapons and equipment, developing new types of battle ships and improving the weapons' informationization level and accuracy in long-distance strike, according to Zhang.

Zhang noted that China follows the road of peaceful development and pursues defensive defense policies.

China has a vast sea territory and it is the sacred duty of the Chinese navy to safeguard the country's marine sovereignty and interests, Zhang added.

"Zhang noted that China follows the road of peaceful development and pursues defensive defense policies." Ya right!!! Pointing nuclear tipped missiles at taiwan is part of that peaceful defensive military strategy i guess!!! China is not content with projecting power in asia alone.....It wants to project power in the Americas and the only way of doing that is having a carrier fleet of your own!!!

"I know nothing..."

I imagine that with a country of 1 billion people, they could find one guy who doesn't know about it to be their spokesman.

Official Chinese release to the US:

Aircraft Carrier? What Aircraft Carrier?! Noooooo... we're PEACEFUL communists. We don't mean you any harm.
By the way, we have built 400 more factories and staffed them with prison workers for $0.12 an hour. Got any more businesses you want to ship our way? Remember, we have no stinkin OSHAA or EPA!
Once again, we won't hurt you, promise.

I'm not gonna sweat it too much. Aside from the US and Great Britain, nobody has been able to float a true carrier since WW2. The Brits retired theirs in the 70's, and the Russian and French carriers are wrecks.

The NEXt version of this story will be that it's an INLAND aircraft carrier..See..China is making this HUGE lake with the THREE GORGES DAM..and it needs to be able to protect the dam...so, ergo, a carrier...How are they gonna get the carrier from the shipyards TO the lake?..some 1000 miles inland..heck..they built the Great Wall didn't they...so no prob..

Actually, Brazil and India have been effectively operating carriers for quite a number of years. China has navalized versions of the SU-27 and is rumored to be training pilots on an airstrip of the size of a flight deck. However, it will take them until 2015 to learn carrier ops as it's not as easy as it sounds.

The Washington Times ^ | June 09, 2005 | Bill Gertz
A highly classified intelligence report produced for the new director of national intelligence concludes that U.S. spy agencies failed to recognize several key military developments in China in the past decade, The Washington Times has learned. The report was created by several current and former intelligence officials and concludes that U.S. agencies missed more than a dozen Chinese military developments, according to officials familiar with the report. The report blames excessive secrecy on China's part for the failures, but critics say intelligence specialists are to blame for playing down or dismissing evidence of growing Chinese military capabilities.

"Our next big conflict showdown will be with CHina..!"

And will end as the American rockets hit the Three Gorges Dam.

Could be. I'd say that going militaristic is problematical for them. It will give both Japan and India the willies. Just what china needs is not only a blue water U.S., but also a blue water India and Japan.

They know full well that the apologists for appeasement here have constantly harped on their NOT having Carriers. They won't admit to having carriers until they have 7 or 8 already deployed and encircling Taiwan.
