Generally, after Karen Quinlan, the idea that the cerebral cortex is the center of awareness has been rejected. Instead it is now thought that the hypothalamus serves this function.

We should remember that when Karen Quinlan died, her autopsy showed that most of her cerebral mantle was intact.
