I don't see the difference. Can you explain?

Cause of death is a scientific thing; manner of death is a legal thing.

"Cause of death" are things like penetrating trauma, exsanguination, anoxia, metastatic cancer, etc. "Manner of death" are things like suicide, homicide, accident, etc.

There is a medical/legal difference which was discussed in the article. It's not smoke&mirrors.

If someone is shot and is in the hospital for six months, finally dying of an infection, then the manner of death would be homicide and the cause of death would be the infection.
