Quite possibly the single most classic and indestructible design in the history of aviation...first flew SEVENTY years ago this year, and hundreds are still out there either on the airshow circuit, flying cargo, or a few still flying passengers.

It's listed on airliners.net as a C-117D, which I think is what was called a "Super DC-3" in the commercial world. Slightly more powerful engines, streamlined landing gear wells, some other changes.

Looks to me like the pilots did a masterful job of getting it down with a minimum of incidental damage. A DC-3 is not a small airplane by any means.

Hey, I just realized something:

The link to the "First Coast" news link mentions 'Pastor' Mark Davis of Clavary Chapel [of Fort Lauderdale].

Hot Toledo, That's my church I go to. And I live right on the Northeast Corner of FXE [Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport].

My gosh! It's got to be unnerving happening so close to home, so to speak and your pastor involved as well.

I was Chief Pilot for a cargo outfit flying two DC-3's

I never worried when in those old birds.. Did you know that there has never been a structural in flight failure of a DC-3?

It was a nightmare keeping engines on 'em though... P&W crushed the molds for the engine cases years back.. something 'bout liability Our biggest problem was that the studs that connected the cylinders to the case would pull out causing the cylinder to depart the formation with great haste.. The other problem was the fracturing if the main connecting rod... If you weren't Johnny on the spot feathering it, you'd run out of oil pressure, and be stuck with a windmilling prop... the entire engine would then shake it self to destruction But it was a sweet bird to fly... and I have to say I enjoyed the attention it got no matter where we went

So I assume you are describing wear out failures due to simple mechanical fatigue. (?)

I've never understood why the folks who make planes don't talk more to the people who fly them. It seems so obvious. Your comments were insightful:

It looks like a big Tylenol with wings.

Roger that, great movie.

I'd chime in with some more quotes, but probably not a good idea.

Absolutely.. IIR we got our engines out of Canada, our maint. guys could change a prop in 3hrs and a engine overnight...
I logged so much time on one engine I started a separate category in my logbook BTW.. she'd fly with a sh!t load of ice too!!!. We flew into Canada a bunch for the auto trade.. In the winter time we'd add a baseball bat to the flight kit ,to bash the ice off

The "Super DC-3S" was a factory retrofit design which Douglas hoped to sell to DC-3 operators, but I believe they only managed to sell about 100 to the Navy as R4D-8. Besides the snazzy vertical tail (baby DC-6 style), square wingtips, etc, it had a 3 foot stretch in the forward fuselage, and was powered by Wright R-1820-80 engines. The Army Signal Corps had three or four that they got from the Navy which they used as electronic labs with SSB radios, etc, back around 1959.

I imagine there are quite a few still making the rounds in out of the way parts of the world, and will be for years to come.

Roger that. I'd see your goat and raise you two freshly bathed pigs over that crying infant. Ah, but that's the stuff that makes for fond memories!

Probably Cuba Airlines.

This sounds bad. :)
