They're the worst.
Dobies, Border Collies, Shepherds and Poodles are the top 4....I forget the order except Border Collies are first.
There is no dog better than a good German Shepherd, and few worse than a bad one.
My first dog was a German Shepherd. She was a real sweetheart. I love her still and will never forget her.
Best dog I ever had. Having her with me was like having a human companion.
I remember reading a book on dog intelligence that put border collies #1. The book was written as I recall by professional dog trainers.
I have no doubt that border collies are very intellignet, but I think you have to be careful about equating intelligence with trainability. The brightest light bulb in the class isn't necessarily the kid who scores the highest on test exams.
If I had to trust my life to the intelligence of a dog, it would be a German Shepherd. I wouldn't have a poodle if it could do equations, on the other hand.

I've owned Dobies, Rotts, and had Shepherds as a boy.
I'm partial to Red Dobies...large males with their package intact.
I have lately taken an interest in traditional American Pit Bulls, Staffordshires and American Bulldogs.
I would like to see those breeds not wrecked and I find them very appealing from the right stock.
But, they are not as smart as Dobies or Shepherds. Both Shpeherds and Dobies learn a bit easier than Rotts though Rotts are up in the doggie IQ ranks too.
Border Collies obviously want to please which helps.
Mutts can learn well too I think.
There are sure a lot of new imported interesting breeds out there.
My Dobie died last year and I usually move on to a new breed rather than trying to replace the dog too closely and I like family pet-protectors and have no desire to breed.
I forgot....had a Standard Schnauzer too in High School....very bright and a braveheart too.
Well, I came on to see if anyone else saw the meltdown on Greta tonight.
Wow....that former DC cop turned lawyer had a coniption fit defending Michael Jackson and hinting at the violence to come....really way out there for a lawyer-talking head....and I usually like the guy ok.
The rest of the panel were amazed and one other lawyer really took him down over it.

The "Pitt Bull Breeds" get a bumb rap.
Some inner city moron drug pusher or rap gangsta, with a testosterone problem and who is mentally challeged, buys one or two, abuses them and then they blame the dogs. They should euthanize the owner.

My next dog is an English or Irish Setter or a Plott hound.
I think they get a bum rap too. There are a lot of adoptive services for Pits but with children I have to have a dog raised right from a pup.
Around here, the dog fighters are either the gangstas you mentioned or farm boy weed growers or meth suppliers and they often duel the inner city guys in a black-white showdown.
The cops bag them regularly.
I've been to bullfights and cockfights in Latin America and Spain and don't really have a big dog in that hunt but I loathe dog fighting here. It's a bad "sport" and involves bad folks. Very very hard on the dogs.
The dog owners should just have duels instead of dogs as proxies.

I agree with you about dogfights. I'm not sure about the cock or bull fighting though. I kind of like it when one of those fancy pants guys get hooked after torturing some bull.

Coyotes are killing pets? Easy solution: get bigger pets. I dare any coyote to mess with my shepherd mix. That'd be one less coyote to worry about, anyways.
I'd like to chase. But I think the setters are the prettiest looking dogs around.
I have this dream about hunting bears or cougars someday with my .54 Hawken and a pack of plott hounds.
