ATLANTA - Former President Carter on Tuesday called for the United States to shut down the Guantanamo Bay prison to demonstrate its commitment to human rights.

"The U.S. continues to suffer terrible embarrassment and a blow to our reputation ... because of reports concerning abuses of prisoners in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo," Carter said after a two-day human rights conference at his Atlanta center.

Such reports have surfaced despite President Bush's "bold reminder that America is determined to promote freedom and democracy around the world," Carter said.

About 540 detainees are being held at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. Some have been there more than three years without being charged with a crime. Most were captured on the battlefields of Afghanistan in 2001 and 2002 and were sent to Guantanamo Bay in hope of extracting useful intelligence about the al-Qaida terrorist network.

Carter said the United States needs to make sure no detainees are held incommunicado and that all are told the charges against them.

Despite his criticism of Guantanamo Bay, Carter said Amnesty International should not have called the prison "the gulag of our time" in a report last month. President Bush has termed the report by the human-rights group "absurd."

Carter said the alleged abuses at Guantanamo Bay could never compare with the forced labor camps operated by the former Soviet Union.

Carter is proof that clue possession is not requisite for a Naval commission.

I think the real headline should read " Carter calls on U.S. to shutdown.." I think that is what he is really after anyway.

why is anyone giving Jummy "the lunatic" Carter ANY credibility?

He nearly had us surrender to the USSR.

He WENT to the USSR to ask for help to elect mondale president.

He OPENLY spoke against the president in time of war.

On every foreign policy intiative he has be demonstrated wrong.

He based the USA in order to obtain a nobel prize. (which he has shamelessly campaigned for since leaving office)

He has sought to set up his carter insititute as a shadow state department for democrats.

The man is nuts.

If anything this announcement means we should EXPANDT Gitmo!

Worst part is that they have buried innumerable moles in all our institutions, continuing their evil America hating ways to the detriment of our beloved country.

I was out of the Navy for close to a decade, and I couldn't believe the damage he did to our Navy, Marines, Air Force, Army and Coast Guard as well as to our CIA and FBI.

Maybe this wretched old POS will move Portland and become their mayor forever.

When Carter was in office why didn’t Russia’s send a hand full of troops and say we want Alaska and the West Coast of the US?

I personally think the Russians missed a great opportunity.

Very true -- and we have to fight them if we want to save our Republic and the America that the framers designed and built. Everyone should be aware of how DEEPLY they are planted --- just look at the PROGRESSIVE CAUCUS in the Congress and look a t WHO AND WHAT the members are.....

Figures! It only makes sense that the one person most responsible for helping to create the "Terrorist Bubble" by not doing a damn thing about the taking of the US Embassy in Iran or any other terrorist act of the day would want to offer "comfort and aid" to America's enemies. Why the Republican leadership does not take on this emasculated excuse for an expresident and his never ending litany of anti-American abuse is beyond me.

"If Ronald Reagan had not defeated Carter, there would be no America."

At a minimum, there would still be a Soviet Union and Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Columbia, and, possibly, Mexico would be client states of the Soviet Union. In a perverse way, the Iranians did us a favor by exposing Carter to the American electorate as weak and spineless.

Next time someone calls Mark Felt a hero, remind him/her that as a result of Watergate, we got Carter.

Then watch that person change the subject immediately.

Nightline probably gave RR more votes because of what you pointed out above, than all of our tv ads.
