Originally, the F-117 was going to be classified as a ground attack aircraft and given either an "A-" or "B-" designation.
Some say that the "F-" designation was given to attract fighter jocks who would not be caught dead in the cockpit of a ground attack aircraft into the program and others say the "F-" designation was given for security reasons to hide the aircraft's true function.
In either case, it remains a non-fighter "Fighter".
