'This Is Not Right'
DES MOINES - Cecilia Beaman is a 57-year-old grandmother, a principal at Pacific Middle School in Des Moines, and as of Sunday is also a suspected terrorist. "This is not right," she told us. It's not right!" This past weekend she and several other chaperones took 37 middle school students to a Heritage Festival band competition in California. The trip included two days at Disneyland. During the stay she made sandwiches for the kids and was careful to pack the knives she used to prepare those sandwiches in her checked luggage. She says she even alerted security screeners that the knives were in her checked bags and they told her that was OK. But Beaman says she couldn't find a third knife. It was a 5 1/2 inch bread knife with a rounded tip and a serrated edge. She thought she might have lost or misplaced it during the trip. On the trip home, screeners with the Transportation Security Administration at Los Angeles International Airport found it deep in the outside pocket of a carry-on cooler. Beaman apologized and told them it was a mistake. "You've committed a felony," Beaman says a security screener announced. "And you're considered a terrorist." Beaman says she was told her name would go on a terrorist watch-list and that she would have to pay a $500 fine. "I'm a 57-year-old woman who is taking care of 37 kids," she told them. "I'm not gonna commit a terrorist act." Beaman says they took information from her Washington drivers license and confiscated and photographed the knife according to standard operating procedure. She says screeners refused to give her paperwork or documentation of her violation, documentation of the pending fine, or a copy of the photograph of the knife. "They said 'no' and they said it's a national security issue. And I said what about my constitutional rights? And they said 'not at this point ... you don't have any'." KOMO News did reach a spokesperson with the Transportation Security Administration for comment. They said they did not have record of Beaman's confrontation but did admit that TSA screeners are, by design, becoming more strict. Despite continued warnings to passengers, TSA screeners say travelers continue to bring banned items in their carry-on luggage. Knives, guns, and other weapons are found and confiscated daily. Fines issued for knives and other sharp objects range from $250 to $1,500. Fines issued for firearms discovered in carry-on luggage range from $1,500 to $7,500. The TSA web site also indicates firearms violations will be referred for potential criminal prosecution. The same site does not propose the same criminal referral for knives like the one Cecilia Beaman was carrying. "This is not the way my country should be treating me," she said. My concern is that if that's the way they're treating American citizens I would hate to think how they're treating other people. It's crazy." The TSA reminds travelers that is has the authority to impose civil penalties up to $10,000 per violation. "TSA needs the help of the traveling public in reducing the number of prohibited items brought to airport screening checkpoints," reads the Sanction Guidelines section of the TSA web site. "TSA recognizes that most passengers who carry prohibited items do so without any ill intent. TSA does not impose fines on the vast number of passengers who inadvertently carry prohibited items. Dealing with any prohibited item, however, adds time to the screening process both for the traveler who brought the item and for other travelers as well." You can find a complete list of banned items, range of fines levied for violations, and information on how to plead your case with the TSA at www.tsa.gov. |
What proof is there that 90% of what people 'allege' is true?
Sorry, but I've had to scratch out a living in the private sector where they expect me to do actual work.
I don't know what your point is, but without proof there's no case. Surely if this happened the way the lady said it happened there would be scores of witnesses and plenty of security camera footage to back it up. All we have so far are allegations.
these are the kind of thing's we should expect when we spend ALL of our time playing.we seem to wan't other's to
defend truth, while we play.shame on us.....
Me too. I won't even go to the airport. There is no way I could keep my mouth shut around the kinf of brownshirts they have there.
Anyone who thinks that post-9/11, you can hijack an airplane with a knife is living in a fantasy world. An awful lot of supposedly freedom-loving folks right here, on this site are supporting this lunacy.
The trouble is, you can't really do anything about it, because the government has shown time and time again, that power is all they are concerned about. They have the guns and are not hesitant at all to use them.
Why are you skeptical?
Have you flown since 9/11?
TSA=Time Standing Around.
What a bunch of twits.
Actually no, since people are not grouped together in such concentrations at the local mall.
In February, my wife and I were flying to Cozumel on a chartered airline. Since all of the chartered flights to Cozumel and other locations in Mexico were departing at the same time, there were over 1,000 people standing in line for the TSA security check.
It was a solid mass of people and only 10 feet away from the front entrance. Any terrorist could have walked in, placed a bomb, and walked out without even being questioned.
This is how the TSA has helped keep us safe!
Today, the TSA is no longer looking for bombs in the airline luggage, but are spending their time looking for prohibited items like cigarette lighters or butter knives.
This insanity must stop.
Actually it will, but only AFTER a few hundred people have been murdered at a TSA security check point.
Isn't almost ALL cases allegations ... we'll see what transpires.
You are exactly right. Demo-commie got caught and should be held accountable. Maybe she thought as a member of a "teachers union", rules did not apply to her, but only the uneducated. NSNR
Don't forget to mention the "Bush Can Do No Wrong" crowd.
They are the ones who almost worship every thing the man says or does.
You can summarize that with one famous quote:
"LETS ROLL!"
Today, the American citizens will fight back, even if it will cost them their own lives.
I read the article, that's why. It provides no proof that any of this actually happened, no corraboration, no verification, nothing. And the things that the woman said make me think that she's a lefty with a political agenda, like this:
"This is not the way my country should be treating me," she said. My concern is that if that's the way they're treating American citizens I would hate to think how they're treating other people. It's crazy."
This type of thuggery is SOP for the JBT's who man the TSA, thanks to the WOT.
I used to call 'em Bushbots, but I've come to think Messianic Republicans fits 'em better. ;o)
I love that attitude...."as long as they are a lefty," (which you are assuming) "then the hell with her rights."
Typical response from a sheep.
My experience has been that there are plenty of those on "our side" who have problems with other nationalities. However, I have always watched how FR monitored those folks and handled them.
Today, I see more and more anti-Bush, anti-Republican garbage being spewed here than ever in my memory.
"This insanity must stop."
OK, now that you've identified this problem what is your proposed solution? Surely, you're not proposing that we eliminate the security checkpoints? After all, once we've done away with these checkpoints, what would keep a terrorist from carrying any number of bombs or weapons onto a commercial aircraft.
Why does she have a Washington driver's license? Looks like she just moved to Iowa. Some of her comments make me think she is a liberal.
That said, if she is not lying about this, it is sad this happened to her.
On the other hand, she brought a knife. What did she expect, a pat on the back?
