ARLINGTON, Virginia President George W. Bush's pledge at his meeting in May with the Palestinian leader, Mahmoud Abbas, to provide $50 million in direct support for the Palestinian Authority is symbolically important, but needs to be 100 times larger to have a real impact.

The Palestinians need at least $5 billion as soon as possible from the United States and other nations,

The communists plan to organize mass uprising in India against US-India defense relationship – can UPA Government survive?

Jul. 5, 2005
India signed a historic strategic defense alliance with America. India and America need each other being the two largest democracies. But the communists are now threatening mass movements against the Congress party led UPA alliance Government in India. After a meeting between CPM general secretary Prakash Karat and his CPI counterpart A B Bardhan on Sunday evening, the Left parties have decided to organize a mass movement against the decision. Countrywide rallies have been planned on July 8.

According to sources in India, common people in India favor US-India close relationships. But the countryside India is not happy with the Congress party and its approach to economic reforms favoring foreign multinationals and Indian oligarchs and business community. The Left Front, a coalition of communists already holds close to seventy seats and its support is crucial for the current Government to survive. The Communists have become enormously popular in recent days. If there was an election today, they can sweep as much as 100 seats in the parliament allowing them to form their own coalition Government. The BJP led NDA, the previous Government was ousted in the last election for the same reason – NDA failed to work for the rural India, instead they worked for foreign multinationals and the Indian oligarchs and select business community ready to provide real big political contributions.

It is sad Congress after promising a lot to the common people of India have fallen into the same trap and is now in a position to be ousted.

The Communists are showing to the country that Congress led UPA alliance is for tilting towards America. The fresh turbulence in the UPA comes on top of the Left's disenchantment with the Congress-led coalition on the proposed disinvestments in BHEL and other Government owned and operated companies and the hike in prices of petrol and diesel.

Can UPA survive the storm without Left’s support?

According to international and Indian think tanks, Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh believes that at the end of the day the Communists will support Congress led UPA over the opposition BJP led NDA.

They may be underestimating the popularity of the Communists. The Communists may sweep the next election by themselves. BJP led NDA will hold its right wing Hindu constituency while biggest loser may be the Congress.
