Speaking of deadly bugs, how come you never hear about the "killer bees" anymore? Did they just go away or disappear through interbreeding with the other bees?

I recall first reading about them in Memphis back in the early 60s.
IIRC, they were were pretty much limited to Texas in the 50s.
When I was living in the country, east of Memphis in the 90s, they were all over the place. My houses were full of them, but I could easily spot them.
They rarely come out into the open, and prefer to live in boxes, behind baseboards, or under piles of papers and books. The bite forms a small blister that within 24 hours will collapse in the center. One friend of mine was treated within 48 hours with high doses of cortisone.
