Thanks for the new thread Judith.. fantastic job as usual.
Thanks for all you do!
Would it be possible to flag 2ndreconmarine's excellent analyses so we don't have to dig back through lots of old posts to find them? If it's hard, no problem. I don't mind digging.
Thank you, FRiends.
"We are excited to begin exploring another clinical indication for Tarvacin(TM)," said Joseph Shan, senior director of clinical and regulatory affairs. "We anticipate this study will accrue patients rapidly due to the prevalence of chronic Hepatitis C infections in the U.S. and the need for new therapies to treat this disease."
The objectives of the phase 1 clinical protocol are to evaluate safety, pharmacokinetics and viral load in patients chronically infected with HCV who have failed to respond or who have relapsed after the current standard treatment with pegylated interferon plus ribavirin. Up to 50% of patients receiving the combination of pegylated interferon plus ribavirin either relapse or do not respond after treatment.
"Receiving clearance to begin this initial Tarvacin(TM) anti-viral clinical trial is an important milestone for the program," stated Steven King, president and CEO. "We are continuing to evaluate Tarvacin's(TM) potential for the treatment of other enveloped virus infections, including HIV, influenza A, influenza B, avian flu, as well as viruses included on the government's bioterrorism watchlist such as Lassa fever and Marburg virus."

Luanda, 31/05 - Two tons of bio-security material and 615 kilos of diverse medicines were handed over Tuesday to the Health Ministry, by the Governments of Egypt and France, to fight Marburg haemorrhagic fever.
The charge d`affaires with Egypt embassy to Angola, Alhassam Soliman, said at the act that his Government is always available to aid Angola and that the gesture is a symbol of solidariety to the people.
On his hand, an official with France embassy said the material worth at 50,000 Us dollars and that French people and Government are solidary with the families who have lost their relatives, due to Marburg.
The Angolan Health Minister, Sebastiao Veloso, thanked the gesture and said that Angola needs more as country faces several epidemics, such as malaria and Marburg.
Marburg haemorrhagic fever, which has already killed more than 350 people is under control, said the Minister, explaining that of the 540 contacts which had been followed now exist only 120.
Yesterday he had several fantastic posts that I'd like to have moved to this thread, graphs and all--I don't know how to move the graphs, but I think I can locate the post numbers.
During the one-hour long audience, the interlocutor of President dos Santos said that they have also discussed issues related to the haemorrhagic fever of Marburg virus, in which he guaranteed that the situation is under control. Mr Sambo said that he believes in the eradication of the disease, but it depends on efforts in relation to the active search of cases within the communities, amongst other factors.
He said that during the meeting he seized the opportunity to underline the "active role" played by the local authorities and particularly the Angolan Ministry of Health in the eradication of the deadly virus, which broke out in last October in northern Uige province.
A new antiviral that may help against Marburg is wonderful news, thank you for posting. I'd be for compassionate use trials for those with Marburg in Angola--it certainly couldn't hurt...
Well, all righty then...
No it certainly wouldn't hurt, not with the unfortunate mortality rate that Marburg Angola has. It's also good news that if this new drug works they are hoping it would apply to alot of other ailments.
Were we discussing botulism, would this be a club rather than a thread (more appropriate for Ebola)?
Yup, that's two articles today saying "we have it under control". I hope they are correct, but, I'm not going to hold my breath. If memory serves we well we've been hearing that for the last couple of weeks as the numbers have gone up.

WHO: Marburg Outbreak Is Under Control
Posted May 31, 2005 2:05PM
Dick Thompson, the WHO spokesman for communicable diseases in Geneva, said authorities were receiving three or four alerts a day but have had no new positive cases for several days.
A senior World Health Organization official said Tuesday authorities have brought under control the worst outbreak of the deadly Marburg virus in history, though the epidemic is not yet close to eradication. The outbreak that has killed 334 people "is under control. At the moment, the epidemic's peak has passed and the trend is very favorable," Dr. Luis Gomes Sambo, the WHO Regional Director for Africa, told reporters.
However, the incubation period for the virus can be 21 days. WHO officials in Geneva have said they do not consider outbreaks to be contained until there have been no new infections for double the maximum incubation time.
The WHO said last week the number of infections is tailing off, but new cases are still emerging and any one of them could spark a new crisis.
The Ebola-like virus appeared last October in the northern province of Uige, which has been the epicenter of the outbreak.
Dick Thompson, the WHO spokesman for communicable diseases in Geneva, said authorities were receiving three or four alerts a day but have had no new positive cases for several days.
Thompson said the virus is currently being contained in Uige province.
The last and previously most severe outbreak of Marburg occurred in Congo, which neighbors Angola, between 1998 and 2000, killing 128 people.
