Exactly. They did it because they are French, that is, because the union was NOT SOCIALISTIC ENOUGH for them (not because it was too socialistic). They weren't given enough power to dictate to the British, the Irish, the Italians and others who are trying to get their economies rolling by lowering taxes and encouraging private enterprise.

Note quite. I read enough of news stories, "pundit analyses" during the 1990s and since I'm not an American, I read a lot of what Europeans write behind you Americans' backs. The truth is, the French had no time for Bubba either - he is an American, and still far too right-wing for their tastes.

They pretend to like him now because it is a bit analogous to us saying we think the Washington Post is marginally less worse than Radio Pacifica. In the same coin from their perspective "Clinton is not as bad as ce cowboy Bush!". Another motive is to trip Americans, especially your "liberals" or centre-left. To them, anyone to the left of Bush is better than Bush himself.

"Monsieur Kerry? Ce right-wing Americane? Non!" would be their response. Howard Dean would be the most right-wing they are willing to tolerate.

BUSH DID IT !

Actually it's kind of fascinating to watch Pres Bush's rivals bite the dust one after another over the years. I guess it's just coincidence. Hee Hee Hee

So they backstabbed their hero .... how is that unusual if for France?

Hmmmm. Seems to me that they simply did the right thing by voting down this vast paean to bureaucracy.... If Jacques considers it a back-stabbing, then he's delusional.

And bear in mind that all the major newspapers and broadcast news in France is subsidized by the government and skittish about criticizing it.
